*** Update 5/1/15

The Portland Police Bureau has relocated the

Mounted Patrol Unit's horses to an

off-site boarding location.

This move was necessary as the Portland Development Commission (PDC) carries out selective deconstruction of the Centennial Mills buildings, located at 1362 Northwest Naito Parkway.

The Mounted Patrol Unit has been housed inside the Centennial Mills building since 2001, but had to temporarily relocate the horses in February 2014 due to concerns of structural instability where the horses were stalled. The horses returned to Centennial Mills in May 2014.

The Mounted Patrol Unit will continue to operate as the horses will be trailered in each day for work.

The unit supervisor, Sergeant Marty Schell said, "While this is not ideal, it is very common nationwide for mounted units to trailer their horses to work, as suitable close-in property becomes harder to come by. We have been fortunate for the last 25 years that we just had to walk out the front gate and we were working."

The Mounted Patrol Unit was established in 1979 and currently has 8 horses, 4 officers and 1 sergeant assigned to it.

In an average month the horses interact with about 1,400 community members while on patrol, primarily in the Downtown core area. In addition to it's primary patrol function, the unit is also available to participate in special events and crowd control details throughout the City of Portland.

Community members can follow the Mounted Patrol Unit on Twitter at @PPBMPU.
