The Gathering in DC in October
Mood:  cool
Topic: Justice

Just talked to my money lady Patty, I cannot go to DC for the October 6th gathering because of health reasons, but can help another go. I will have $100 set aside by September 15th to assist with transportation for a person who wants to go but cannot afford the trip. Will you join me in trying to get people there who can go but don’t have enough money? I cannot afford more but it may help; will you? You can e-mail me and let’s talk. I have volunteered to be the Oregon representative to get people to DC. The reason I volunteered is there was nobody listed for all of Oregon and I think I can put the time and effort in; I do believe, “It Is Time.” In a conference call yesterday it was clear that they want people in DC and support protest around the country are secondary, there will be mass arrest and they also need people to act as support people for food, bail etc. etc. I will be on the Hawthorne Bridge this Friday at 4:00 PM and if you want to talk that is a good place to do it. Please help in anyway you can, this seems like a big deal. You can go to http://October2011.org for more info.

We Must Support This Event In Every Way
Mood:  hungry
Now Playing: We must help
Topic: ACTIONS !

October 6th in Washington DC will be a time for all activists to stand up and say ENOUGH! David Swanson, Veterans For Peace, Code Pink, Ray McGovern, Chris Hedges, Ann Wright, and so many other heroes will take a stand for Justice and Peace by gathering in Freedom Square and not leaving until our government agrees to their demands--it will be a time!

We who cannot go must support them in every way possible, one way that will be important is getting the word out about this event. We must pressure all TV and radio stations in Portland who say they are Progressive to do a show or, at the very least, a portion of their show on this event and have representatives appear on their shows.

How many of you would be willing to throw a picket line around a TV show or radio show that refuses to get the word out about this event? We must start this now as Oct 6 is approaching at an alarming rate. We need people to contact KBOO, KPOJ, TV stations 2,6,8 and our local newspapers to first request their participation and then picket them if necessary. For more info on the event in DC go to:

Here is a good video by two wonderful people Joe-Anybody and Malcolm from Veterans For Peace talking about October 6---enjoy

What do you think?

Joe Walsh-Lone Vet

After posting on Indi Media about the Oct 6 Event, the question of nonviolence came up and this was my response:

Individuals For Justice will request all who take part in any protest here in Portland, Oregon to practice nonviolence because the main event in DC is calling for nonviolence and it is a tactic that works. I am not a pacifist but do practice nonviolence and will this time because to do otherwise would make a mockery of what we say we are supporting. There will be no permits, no peace monitors, no preaching of how to behave. That is the best I can do given what we will try to accomplish. We will mimic what they do in Washington, DC in the sense by going to Pioneer Square holding a gathering with music and no speeches. We will sit down and stay as long as we can. We will be told that we must leave the square and that is the point that you have to decide at what level of protest you will engage in. Some will leave and act as support from that moment on, others will stay and know that they may be arrested. Those who are arrested when released will decide if they will return to a meeting place and sit again. Some of us will stay as long as the people in DC stay, and will need others to bring water and food. All of these are things that I see as being in support of the main event in DC, they are subject to voting by the group. Each group will determine what they want to do and contribute, you must be comfortable in your decision because you are risking a great deal. Those are my thoughts and are subject to change as each group decides what they will do. My vision is that there should be many levels of commitment and each will play a very important role. The thing you should think about is going to DC---but if you cannot, what are you willing to do to support it? I am on the Hawthorne Bridge every Friday from about 4:00 PM till about 5:30 PM protesting the wars, and in front of City Hall every Wednesday at 0900 to call for the replacement of all three people up for reelection in 2012. Come and talk, you don’t want to miss this action, it may be the beginning of our standing up as a people and saying, ENOUGH!!! I hate going to meetings and will talk to anyone who is interested in supporting what will happen in our capital.

As far as the radio and TV stations we should put pressure on them now. First notification and requesting info on what they will do to cover the event and then you will decide how to react, there are no rules for the confrontation with the MSM. KBOO and KPOJ I would suspect they would be friendly but the others may take a bit of convincing.

News from Portland, Oregon
Mood:  chillin'
Now Playing: City Hall with a smile

We are in the streets in Portland, Oregon. There are small demonstrations in a number of places on Fridays and Saturdays and sometimes during the week. We stand the watch for all those who can’t or are too fearful to hold a sign saying something about War and Peace. Most protest/vigils are quiet but a few are noisy, to the annoyance of the business community. One protest on the Hawthorne Bridge now has a running battle with a restaurant that complains because we ring cow bells and the management of the restaurant does not want their outside customers disturbed while drinking and eating. I wonder what these people do with their heads when they hear that we are bombing over six countries and murdering civilians at alarming rates. How do they sleep at night knowing that America is the arms dealer of the world. We sell to anyone who has the money to buy war planes, tanks or ships. Sometimes we have a special sale on Wednesdays, buy one war plane, get your choice of free bombs or rockets. Is it not special that we rank number one in killing children and 34th in successful *child births? As we stand on our bridge each Friday and watch people drive by in their gas guzzling machines, mostly alone, we wonder what it will take to get them to join us, just stop for a few moments and hold a sign that says something like, “Stop these F-Wars.” I know that some are offended by me using F-Wars, you tell me it turns people off; we must be polite. I don’t agree, I think it is now time to be angry. The world is on fire and you worry about offending people, sorry but we are way past being nice. President Obama is nice, Pelosi is nice, Reid is nice and all three should be run out of office. I don’t want to be nice. There is a story about a guy Roberto and I saw on the Hawthorne Bridge who was standing alone in the middle of the bridge with a sign that said something like “Fuck Your Wars.” We first saw him as we were driving across the bridge one Friday and I smiled, “Roberto, did you see that guy with a small sign that said “Fuck Your Wars?” We were impressed because I preach to all who will listen, get off your asses and do something. Don’t wait for someone to invite you to a march, protest, vigil or gathering, just do it yourself and here was a guy doing just that--I was happy.

A week or so later he came near where we were but kept a respectable distance from our position, he was not with us but seemed to support what we were saying, I went over and said hello. He seemed shy to me so I just thanked him for having the guts to hold a sign and said he was welcome to stand with us if he wanted to. He seemed nervous but was happy that I acknowledged his presence on the bridge. Well, not all are accepting in the peace movement, what happened next is an indictment to our cause. One of our occasional protestors who was annoyed with my sign that says F-Wars was outraged with a sign that said “Fuck Your Wars.” He had the audacity to come down on the guy for his sign and that is a big no/no with me; if you want to judge, please do it someplace else and not during a demonstration that I called. I told the person who was upset by the language that we only ask people to be proud of what they write on their signs and do not criticize what others end up writing. I was not happy. So please, if you are offended by what people put on their signs just leave. I am so tired of people who will come to a protest and want to be nice, just go away! I don’t want to argue the point, just go away. There are lots and lots of protests where you will be among nice people, one that I call is not one of those. I have gotten into arguments over this issue a number of times, but now just tell people if you are offended by direct action or yelling back at people who call us terrible names, or by someone who has a sign that you don’t like--go, we will miss you, but go! I once told Commissioner Fritz that when I come into a hearing to testify I don’t want people to say, there is the Lone Vet, I am so glad he made it; I want them to say, “OH Shit!”

We/I will be on the bridge again this Friday, don’t come for me or anyone else; come because you are pissed and want these Fucking Wars to end! We will be celebrating the October Event in DC which will be the most important event to take place in years. There will be mass arrests and many will put their lives on the line one more time and not just parade around on a Saturday and go home; it will be a time!

We/I will continue my vigil at City Hall to replace all three members of the council. We have been there for months each and every Wednesday just before the Council meets and so we have two down and one to go, Commissioner Fritz is the only remaining member who has not announced a sudden urge to spend more time with their family. I would not lose any sleep if she was reelected but you have an opportunity to send a strong message to Commissar Salzman and the Fish by voting out Amanda. We call our vigil, “Run the Rascals Out” and that is exactly what we mean, all five should eventually be defeat because they collectively are not worth spit. We intend to be in front of City Hall until the election in 2012 and about the city with our signs. Join us if you can, wish us well if you see us, or just sit on your ass and do nothing--lots of choices!

Some of you have asked why we stopped our protest in front of the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; the reason is simple, we can’t win. For the War Criminal Judge Jay Bybee to be impeached it must start in the House of Representatives and with this group of bandits in the House that will never happen. We will return anytime we hear Judge Bybee is coming to our city, or there is another reason to protest. We spent over two years in front of the 9th and let lots of people know that we have a War Criminal on the court. There is some news on the anti-torture front, read here:

City Hall Protest
Mood:  incredulous
Now Playing: Ringing of the Bells
Topic: City Hall

This Wednesday I will return to City Hall to let them know that we want a new council come November of 2012.  Randy not running, Sam not running and Amanda is running against Mary Nolan.  We told the City Council not to vote for the JTTF, they did.  We told the City Council not to vote for the Sit-Lie (lie) ordinance, they did.  We told them not to cave in on the covering of the reservoirs, they did.  Two out of the three up for reelection are not running because they know they would lose, only Commissioner Fritz remains to defeat.  We have a great opportunity to vote in 3 new people, a majority of the council and we should do that to send a message that if you go against your constituents, you are gone--finished--out of there--can you hear me yet Commissioners Salzman and Fish.  We honored ourselves by protesting against these measures but got busy with other stuff, rejoin the fight----we are winning this one.

We should ask all candidates if they will recind these terrible ordinances and actions by this group of "Dropes!"

City Hall
0900 out front on 4th

I be the old guy in the red shirt, laughing most of the time.  Yelling some of the time but always hopeful for people to get into the streets!

Where Do We Go Now
Mood:  don't ask
Topic: Justice

I had a dream and in that dream I asked the question:

It seems to me the only thing left to do is form a government in exile.  It would not have a lot of legal basis but would embarrass the hell out of this administration.  First a people's congress then a government in exile.  Anyone ready to go back to Philadelphia?

Friends, can we progressives here in Oregon get single-payer health care passed in Oregon? This would be a worth while local effort statewide, or am I wrong?

The Oregon Progressive Party could lead this effort, Yes?

Obama Blows a Judas Kiss to the Poor
Mood:  happy
Now Playing: It Is All About Politics Son
Topic: Justice

By Ray McGovern - Posted on 03 August 2011

(Study the Picture)

The unconscionable result of the manufactured crisis over the debt ceiling shows that the political Right knows how to play hardball, and that President Obama and his hapless party know how to get rolled. There are other options; and we, the people, need to press them home.

The Obama-brokered deal on debt and spending was certainly what the Germans call eine schwere Geburt (a difficult birth); this one should have been aborted.

The Obama surrender reminds me of a sermon that Dr. Martin Luther King gave during the turbulent 1950s, in which he peered into the future and issued a prescient warning:

"A nation or a civilization that continues to produce soft-minded men purchases its own spiritual death on an installment plan."

In promoting and then signing yesterday the so-called "deficit reduction" legislation, President Barack Obama has placed himself squarely in the ranks of those spiritual-death-dealing, "soft-minded" men about whom Dr. King warned so ominously.
