WEDNESDAY: December 11, 0930-CITY HALL

I thought the City Council meeting would be boring; wrong. I decided to pull two items off the Consent Agenda because they both were really hidden items that should be discussed but the 4+1 s---s wanted to move alone, nothing to see here. The first item was listed as 1167 and of course, "It was an emergency."

 http://www.portlandonline.com/auditor/index.cfm?c=50265&a=472882

Acting City Attorney was asking for ten thousand more to be given Black Helterline LLP for outside legal counsel. This caught my eye because we have about *30-35 lawyers in the City Attorney's office and I could not figure out why we are not using them in place of an outside contractor? So I asked. I was taken back when the Mayor told me that we have no attorneys who have experience in Immigration law and the reason was we have no immigration problems in the city of Portland. I laughed but don't think the mayor got it. Immigration is one of the biggest issues on the west coast and here in Portland we have people being picked up by ICE and the police department. There was just a protest about the Sheriff arresting people and turning them over to ICE for deportation. Here is some info on H-18 and other immigration issues, but this firm seems to get 50 grand for filling out forms: "City required the services of outside legal counsel to work on immigration issues related to H-18 and other immigration forms."

More on this issue:

The rubber stamp council voted for this extra money, well hell not their money it is yours.
The second item was 1169, which create a new represented classification of information Security Architect and establish an interim compensation rate for this classification. "It was an Emergency."
I argued against this because we are laying-off **firefighters and creating new classification at the same time, seem psychotic to me. The fact that we have firefighters pissed because they are concerned that they can't do their job and answer calls with all due dispatch is freighting to this old veteran. Do one or the other, cut and try to save money or keep our firefighters and get rid of this nonsense of reclassifying position and paying people more. This is more of the same crap that happens when politicians think they are smarter than the people who put them in office.

** Firefighters cuts have now been postponed for at least two years as of Friday----I like it!

There was one more issue that we spoke on that the rubber stamp council ignored our pleas and passed it unanimously: Item 1165.
This was not an emergency; it only had to do with a report from the Bureau of Emergency Management Strategic Plan 2014-2016. Our questions had to do with how would people get lifesaving drugs or how would people who are on oxygen be assured they would get those lifesaving things they have today. Commissioner Novick answered, it is the County's responsibility to get you your meds and if you are on oxygen call the county. We were not impressed with this answer and will ask the county about how they plan on doing this. I hate it when politicians pass the buck to another government body; it is like they don't know we live in the city of Portland. Once again the rubber stamp council, (RSC) voted unanimously for this report. So at the end of a fun day the score was RSC-3 us-0. But we made them think!
•34 listed Asst. City Attorneys, (includes management)

Thursday was a full day; it started out with meeting Lightning at the County Board Meeting and ended with a vigil for Fred Bryant and Keaton Otis. In the afternoon I spent some time with the people who were arrested over two years ago and have been battling for justice.

The County Board meeting was interesting because the sheriff was coming in to explain why and how his department managed to violate state law. Seems like it should a big thing when the law enforcement department does not live up to expectations in following the law when it comes to paying their employees; apparently it is not so.

 link to www.oregonlive.com

Lightning took on the sheriff after the Commissioners ask a few questions but nothing like Lightning. He went after the overtime hard; he was not interested in being nice, just fair. I laughed when he completed his evaluation of the problem, it was priceless! Commissioner Smith came over to talk to Lightning and her staff said they would send us the copy of the audit, and they did. We never get this type of response from the city with one exception and that is Commissioner Fritz. Even when she is annoyed she does respond and that is honorable. So, we departed the county building feeling good and I was off to the courthouse to lend support to those radicals who wanted justice and to keep our post office going. They took the question of the "right" to a jury trial all the way to the State Supreme Court. I did not count the defendants and lawyers but the courtroom was packed. I loved it. The judge seemed to be trying to get all the pre-trail stuff in some kind of order. Many people were being represented Pro Bono, and the lawyers all wanted to represent more and more people. It was amazing to watch and support. I left just before a major fight with the judge by one of the defendants, had to do with his refusal to sign or fill out paper work. He wanted to represent himself and the judge said, "OK, but you have to fill out the paper work saying you will represent yourself." The guy said no! This was happening before I left, I understand the judge called for the marshals or sheriffs to the courtroom. I missed that part. I wanted to stop at my home to pick up pictures of Fred and Keaton for the vigil. After eating something I was off again this time to 6th and Halsey.

The vigil for Fred and his son Keaton was good, we had family members with us and that makes me smile. There were about 20 of us and we talk some about Fred and I ask all present to keep the pressure on. We had a few sign up to help us work on the presentation to the Federal Judge coming in February. (est.) We will have people go before this judge and request/demand a totally independent body to investigate police misconduct. We need to believe in what these investigations produce and the only way that will happen is when the people investigating have no connection to city hall or the cops. Friday would also be busy; we had our third Friday of, find homes for some lonely clothes, propane, hats, gloves, stoves, sweaters, socks, coasts, some food, and hot coffee. It is getting to be a fun gathering, you should come next week if for no other reason but to share a cup of coffee with some really cool folks. Steve joined us at Chapman and among other items he had a clock with a picture of a DODO bird. I stole it and you will see it appear at City Hall during one of our 3 minute speeches to the 4+1 s---s. I just love of idea of timing them----ha ha! Roberto and I ran out on the group to go visit Hayseed who is in OSHU and has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was in good spirits and wide awake, both Roberto and I were pleased that he seem in touch with what the docs were saying and is looking forward to assisted living which may happen next week.

Life sometimes is just cruel, I remember when my oldest sister was told she had terminal cancer, it was very hard.
Hayseed was worried about how we were taking the news, he was concern for us that is the kind of guy I want to be some day. If you want to call him please do, I have his phone number and if you email me I will send it to you or just call the Hospital, his full name is Joe Deevers and is in Rm. 18 on 5A. I am over my allowed time and must begone, until next week!

IFJ Report on 12.1.13

Written by: Joe Walsh "The Lone Vet"

Wednesday, November 27, 2013 during a city council meeting Commissioner Steve Novick suggested that I was in the employ of the Koch Brothers. To understand how this was such a cheap shot by this sell-out, one has to know two things one, who the Koch Brothers are and two, who Joe Walsh is and what his long journey for "Justice" looks like. First, to the Brothers of Corruption.
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_family

Not only would I never be associated with these monsters of industry, I believe if they were not so rich and powerful they would be in federal prison. For Brutus, AKA Comm. Novick to suggest that I am in the influence of these two political manipulators stems from his annoyance of our objection concerning agenda item #1127 which was introduced by him under the secret blanket of the consent agenda. The consent agenda is a group of proposals that are routine and do not need any discussion; so says the council. We, as the people who will be affected by this action, can do a parliamentary move and request that any item in the consent agenda be pulled out for discussion. We did that on this item because the council once again was going to rubber stamp a request to give a position of Asst. Director about a $50,000.00 per year raise. Here is what the request says:

Financial Impact
"There is no direct cost to create the new classification. One fulltime regular position will be reclassified from an Assistant to the Bureau Director with a maximum rate of $103,355 to the new classification which has a maximum rate of $151, 798-an annual increase of $48,443."

Brutus, AKA Commissioner Novick, is defending giving the person who fills this position a $48,443 raise using your money. I think when he was looking in the mirror he saw the Koch brothers in the background and decided to use them to counter our objection to this terrible misuse of government funds. I think the Koch Brother would be on Brutus' side and not ours; we wanted the rubber stamp gang of five to stop this but even Commissioner Fritz went with the four suits, it was disgraceful. We raised our objections to this waste of your money, will you at least call the mayor's office and register your views on this pay raise. I remember the union going before the council and trying to break an impasse and believe me they were not asking for a $48,443 raise.
Mayor's phone number 503-823-4120
My background, the short version:

In 1970 I was in the Navy and stationed at the Naval Amphibian Base in Coronado. After 8 years in the Navy I filed as a Conscientious Objector against the war in Vietnam; The Navy was not happy. After going to college and receiving a BA, I went to work at Long Beach Naval Shipyard as a Boilermaker. I ended up becoming a utility dispatcher which included switching electrical equipment. I was covered by the IBEW and became a local Vice President and Chief Union steward. About 4 years before retirement I finally accepted an offer to go into management and became a supervisor. I always acted in some capacity to help people. Since coming to Portland I have worked to make life a little better and speak up for people who do not have a voice in this city. So, for politicians to connect me and the Koch brothers in the same sentence are hurtful and will not go without me yelling from the high heavens. So, Commissioner Novick is back being called Brutus, who was the last person to stab Caesar, and the famous legendary line, "Et tu Brute."

There was no meeting of the County Board because of Thanksgiving. This is a tough holiday for me; I have wonderful memories of our family getting together but am very aware what this time means to the "People." Most of my friends are vegetarians and will not eat meat; most of my friends also struggle with this day of thanks at the expense of millions of the people who were massacred at the hands of the white settlers and occupiers. The state of Israel has learned much from our way of life and genocide is on the top of the lesson plan.

I need a positive story and I have many but let me offer these. I hope it puts a smile on your face; sometimes it is hard to remember how wonderful we can be:

Friday, November 29 was a day to remember; we tried to be good and I think we succeeded in a small way. Roberto, Patty and I joined with Jose and friends at Chapman for our first meeting of people who need things and things that are lonely. We spent about 90 minutes and had a great time and the word is getting out that we will try with all our might to keep this up during the cold periods. If you want to help let us know or just stop by Chapman and have a cup of coffee with us. (Rumor has it you can get anything out of me if you give me cup of Jo.) Roberto and I went to the Hawthorne Bridge for about an hour to protest wars, NSA, and the teachers having a hard time with reasonable negotiations. We love being on the bridge and most of the regulars who pass us on Fridays are friendly. Saturday was a strange day.

We decided to go and hang out with the rich people from the Pearl. We also would do some kind of action in the face of the people who were gathered for a sing along about a homeless man who wandered around a place called Jerusalem about 2000 years ago. We had a die-in and there will be some great pictures, but my face is covered, as I volunteered to be a covered corpse.

This was a first for me, not only did I have to keep my mouth shut, (Novick & Hales would love that news) but I had to remain still. I was a dead head—ha! From all the reports it went well and to add to our joy, we had a bad Santa in the Pearl. There was this guy dressed in a Santa suit who told us to be quiet, and when the answer came back in laughter he said he called the cops. There was a young child who saw and heard the Santa telling us he called the cops and the child asked the question of the day, "Mom, why is Santa calling the cops on the homeless people?" It was a precious moment. The police did not come into to the park and all went peaceful and merry, a bad Santa in the Pearl, "fancy that." Sunday will be a day of rest, I am tired and must rest up after my death, (make believe death.) I know I left some stuff out, but that is just me and this is now very long. The coming weeks are just as busy for us.

Into the streets!

REPORT BACK DATE: 11.24.13

          http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2013/11/425875.shtml

Weekly report of our actions and activities of Individuals For Justice during the week Nov. 17-23.

Once again let me work backwards and report on what we did starting with our weekly protest on the Hawthorne Bridge. Roberto arrived at my home and announced that it was windy and cold. We went anyway and he was very correct, our signs were blowing all over the place, even the ones on a rope were blowing straight up in a horizontal position so that none could read them. We had a special sign telling all that we supported our teachers; we wanted to add to the bigger protest that was taking place on the Burnside Bridge.

I always laugh when it rains or is cold, "We will get the sympathy vote." We lasted about an hour and Charlie Johnson joined us in the wind storm, it was funny. Many people looked at us as if we were crazy people and sometimes I think we are a little nuts to try to change this society to be a little more human, but what the hell, we do have fun from time to time. Thursday is always a good part of my week. I get to attend the County Board and spend some time with Lightning and others who come to join us as we monitor the five women who lead Multnomah County. This Thursday Lightning spoke on police overtime, homelessness, and corruption and I spoke about Mr. Dixon's replacement. I urged the board to look within the county and not do what Mayor Hales announced he would do and that is a very expensive exercise in looking for a candidate nationwide. We have not done well with this concept and we have spent way too much money doing these types of things. So we shall see.

We did send an e-mail to the city urging them to consider replacing top level officials with people here in Portland. Wednesday was funny.

Wednesday is my day of sorrow, my penance for all my past sins demands I attend the City Council Meetings and listen to the 4 s---s +1 tell us how wonderful they are, and how they will do wonderful things for the homeless/houseless. November 21, 2013 was a better meeting than most; I left after Communications because I wanted to support Michael Meo who was on trial in the County Courthouse a block away. I got to the courthouse about 1030 after going through security went to room 544 and was stunned to see no one else there for support, I hate it when we ask people to stand tall and then let them stand alone. I stayed until we broke for lunch and did not try to go back for the afternoon session, due to being tired. I listen to my body and when it says enough, I obey. I thought the case would be carried over until the following day, I was wrong. Michael Meo reported he was found guilty of disobeying a lawful order from a park ranger and fined $260, he paid the fine. I am sad that another person suffered at the hands of our would-be-judicial system. I am also sad that the people who called for the demonstration did not show up at his trial, or any Green Party members, or his friends. What the hell is the matter with us that we don't support those who get arrested? Tuesday was better for me.

Tuesday night we attended a meeting of a group that is now called J4KO, Justice for Keaton Otis, and that was wonderful. Not sure how much info I am comfortable putting out, so let me say it was a good and noble gathering of people who will keep the vigil going and prepare for the upcoming testimony during the public testimony in front of the judge who is supervising the final settlement between the city and DOJ. There is much work to be done and all present pledge to do what we can to finally get some level of accountability from the Portland Police Force. There was one other event Roberto and I attended and that again was a delight. The event was called, "Racism and Settler-Colonialism at Home and Abroad" put on by *PSU students, KBOO, and SUPER.

The reasons I enjoyed this gathering was because there were about 150 people present, mostly students but lots of older people. The students were way ahead of us when we were in our 20s and 30s, they had a better understanding of how the power structure works here in the good old US of A. The other reason I thought this was a productive meeting was the diversity of ideas that were allowed to flow. I know we were on a University campus but even given that, it was refreshing. I was also glad to hear so many students who are aware and will try to do better than we did. I left the gathering tired but smiling. We, as people who are activists, must work to ensure these and other students are not burdened with debt that they cannot risk continuing their quest for justice.

Speaking of justice, there is a guy who has decided to live on the streets for one year. He is a minister; he is a good and noble person, my friend. He is Jose Serrica, and his videos are under Joefreedom and you can watch his latest video or livestream called "Update from Camp." If you want to know how things are going on the streets, we will try to bring you leaders from the streets and their stories. Individuals For Justice supports this noble man and ask all who we know to do the same.

* A conversation towards building global solidarity featuring speakers from SUPER, Las Mujeres, United Indian Students in Higher Education (UISHE), and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). We are honored to have Dr. Cornel Pewewardy, Director of the Indigenous Nations Studies Program (formerly Native American Studies), guiding the planning of the panel.

[This picture is from a previous meeting in 2013]

When I am speaking to the Portland City Council I am in crisis mode and as I smile at them tears are flooding my body. These local politicians are the worst of the worst; they operate in a parallel universe. Wednesday, I went to take my regular seat and was greeted by Jim who was sitting there and that made me smile. I like Jim, we disagree on some things but he is a man who worries about our future and the future of our kids, I love that. I sat down feeling good, happy and there was nothing on the agenda that perked much interest, it looked boring; I was very wrong. Commissioner Fish started the action after my passionate plea about how they were going to use money to help the homeless. After my 3 minutes he used my name and speaking in a very condescending voice about their intention of spending 1.7 million dollars and not one cent of that for the people who are on our streets. They are going to once again waste money by giving it to the same people who have failed us for so long. My "Irish" hit an all-time high level of anger and I shouted out, that is a lie! Mayor Char-lie ordered me to be quiet then ordered me to get out, I said no! The fish man used my name from his perch and that is a violation of protocol and I called the would-be representative out. Security came to get me but the mayor in his anger made a mistake by giving me a choice, get out or shut up. I said I would be silent, and that caused some confusion, I was not going to make it easy on them, they are defective human beings and I just cannot stand the hypocrisy of it all. If the people of Portland reelect Nick Fish and Dan Saltzman they will get more and more mediocre responses to their requests. We must say goodbye to these "Abbott and Costello" wannabes, it is just too much. Thursday is always a better day.

 http://www.abbottandcostello.net/

I like Thursdays because I go to the County Board and the people there may be problematic but I always have the feeling they care, all five of them. This visit was going to be hard for me because I was hurt during last Thursday's, (11/07/2013) meeting and I wanted to take them on but did not want to alienate them; it was hard but Patty said I did not come across hostile, just hurt. What happened was last Thursday the board wanted to celebrate Veterans Day and the way they decide to do it caused me a lot of pain and I needed to tell them why. They had ROTC from PSU march in with the American flag and the flag from Oregon in formation. They were in uniform and marched in military style, all stood and then proceeded to the front of the auditorium and did another military maneuver. They stood at attention while the national anthem was played. Everyone in the room stood and had their hand over their hearts except me. Since I was sitting alone it was very hard to not get up, but I was not going to celebrate Veterans Day, once known as Armistice Day, by an exercise in super patriotic nonsense. Veterans Day by law is a day to honor the peace after World War 1 with the hope never to go to war again, not saluting flags, not playing the Star Spangled Banner, not telling lies about soldiers defending our freedoms, not getting big savings on mattresses, or cars; we celebrate the end of war and those who gave so much to end it. Europe still rings the bells and at the 11th month, 11th day, 11th hour there is silence for two minutes to celebrate ending a war. As much as I like the 5 ladies, if I were to stand, I would have to live with the fact that I sold out for acceptance, and my legs would not let me do that, not at my age. So I told them about Armistice Day 1918 and the great celebration around the world. I also asked if they would join me in my task to get the churches to ring their bells next year throughout the city in celebration of peace and no more wars. That would be a good thing.

 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24893272

The rest of today's meeting, 11/14/2013, was good. There were many wonderful people trying to help the human condition. We do have much to applaud but more to do in our efforts to end the shameful and hurtful reality of having families and others living in the rain and cold on the Portland Streets. As long as there is "No room at the Inn" for one human being, we are all guilty of neglect and will have to answer for it someday. If there is a God, Commissioner Fish, I do not want to try to explain that New York had more people on their streets than Portland. You can do that sir, and let us all know what hell is like. Friday we will be back on the streets near the Hawthorne Bridge to raise our voice against drones, Gitmo, torture, ODOT, homelessness/houselessness, NSA spying, police accountability. Bring a sign and meet us at SW 1st and Madison, about 4:00PM. We be the two old guys looking lonely but steady.

Can Good People Be Hypocrites?

By: The Lone Vet

I was walking around trying to figure out where everyone was, when from across 4th Avenue I saw the man, the chief of police, the one and only Mike Reese. The thought came easily, just follow the chief and he will lead you to the gathering of people who wanted to spend 1.7 million bucks on helping the people who had camped outside city hall for about two years. I followed him but he said he was late and left me at the elevators, sometimes I get the feeling he does not like me very much. After checking with the mayor’s office I found myself in the council chambers and there in real life was Commissioner Dan Saltzman with about 15-20 suits sitting around the table in a square. I tried not to laugh.

As I was putting down my stuff, coat, cane, and oxygen carrying backpack, I looked around and the homeless were in the peanut-gallery and the suits took up all the seats at the table. I was not amused; I thought they were actually going to do something this time around. We spend 10s of millions of dollars on the homeless and we have more people on the streets than when we started; why is that mr. mayor?

I yelled out to Commissioner Saltzman, “Why are there no homeless at this table?” They ignored me, so I yelled as loud as my lungs would allow, “Where are the people that know about being homeless?” The comish in a very stern voice said, “I am running this meeting.” My reply was that I did not want to run it because it was a fraud. We have done this crap hundreds of times and keep wanting the outcome to be different, it never will. The people around the table actually think that they know about homelessness, they don’t. The only people at the table who might know something about being cold and alone would be Marc Jolin from Join or Israel Bayer from Street Roots, but I was sad seeing them in this group of, “Let’s play house.” I did not interrupt any more, but they did know I was pissed for whatever that was worth. The meeting lasted about 90 minutes and all departed in good cheer to feel like they are trying to do something about the poor people who are on the streets. Why, even Chief Reese made the statement that seeing a child on the streets, hungry and cold is heart breaking.” First Chief, you got to have a heart in order for it to break, you and the dick Cheney do not qualify. As they left not one stopped to talk to any of the people who were homeless outside of City Hall, not one! They scurried away not to be contaminated by this thing called homeless. I don’t like these creeps, guess you get that feeling by now. Two people I cannot stand, one, a thief, (who steals from the poor) and the other a hypocrite; both were here this evening. They will waste this 1.7 million because that is what they do, one member of this panel is Nick Christensen. You say you don’t know Nicky? He represents the now famous Lents Neighborhood Asses who had Oregon Department of Transportation, (ODOT) deliver large sharp-edged boulders to a place where people were resting; they wanted the homeless to move on, the homeless did; Fancy That. We should get his ass off this committee and replace him with Jose. We have Chief Reese on this committee, let’s get him off and replace him with Lightning. Deborah Kafoury is now a candidate and should not be on this committee, we like her and would not lose any sleep if she stayed, but we need replacement slots. She could be replaced by Tequila or Joel, or any of the other two to five thousand people we find on our streets. Point is you must have people who can tell you what it is like when you are cold, and it is raining and a cop tells you to get your stuff and move now! This panel is a sham and our tax money will once again be wasted. Bye-bye!

On Wednesday we were back in the City Council Meeting and my t-shirt said “Danny Wants To Be In Charge” on the back, “Screw Up Coming.” Not sure if Saltzman read it, he is not talking to me. Dan Handelman from Cop Watch was there and we both signed up to offer our advice to the 5 shi-s about reappointing 10 members to the Independent Police/review/cover up Board. I was not sure what Dan would say, but for me they should not just rubber stamp these appointments and to do 10 at once, may be part of the reason the Dept. of Justice thinks that our police depart is so screwed up. Well, Dan was logical, I was pissed and we both once again got shot down. Comm. Novick seemed particularly annoyed with me this day and did go after me. He suggested in his smug way that I compile a list of all the people from Cop Watch, ACLU, Lawyers Guild, or any other organization that has been rejected. I answered him by saying, “What are you talking about, my advice/suggestion is for you to get off your ass and recruit new blood for these committees.” I really am getting to not trust this opportunist.

Thursday morning for me is always a fun day, I go and monitor the County Meeting and get to see people I know, usually sneak in a mocha, (don’t tell Patty) and enjoy the morning. The Sheriff was there with a request to get more money for overtime; it was a sham, but what the hell, the damn budget is so complicated no one in the room could understand the big picture. I did offer my 3 minutes of wisdom and restricted it to Fred and his son Keaton and a limited report about what happened at the gathering of hypocrites. (See above.) There was going to be some discussion about the coming cold and the homeless, I could not stay for that as I was not feeling 100%. Tomorrow we will return to the Hawthorne Bridge and hold our weekly protest about wars and peace, hot local issues, and this week the NSA looking at you baby. The Obama administration has been such a disappointment we may have gone backwards instead of moving forward. I pray that I am wrong, but almost can hear the answer.

Keep fighting, it is better to fight and fail than to watch and wonder what the hell happened.

LET THEM EAT ROCKS - (Houseless get rocks tossed at them)
Mood:  crushed out
Now Playing: "Storm The Bastille, with calls and pickets"
Topic: Houseless
We must fight this with all our might, "Storm The Bastille, with calls and pickets."

A few days ago I got an email about Oregon’s Department of Transportation delivering large rocks to an area in the Lents neighborhood. This was a place where people, human beings, set up a camp under the 405 Freeway. The solution is the s...ame as Marie Antoinette came up with when she remarked that let the people eat the crumbs from the bread, or as the more common use of the legend is, “Let them eat cake.” ODOT goes one better by saying, “Let them eat rocks.”
http://www.katu.com/news/local/ODOT-rolls-in-boulders-in-hopes-of-keeping-homeless-campers-away-229183181.html

I want to get to a place where I am calm, logical, and persuasive, but these jackasses just will not let me do it. Every time I feel calm and happy that the world is good, some idiot from the city, county or now this new entry into stupidity does something that sends me into the overhead and I want to scream; and I will---very loudly.

We must attack this shit straight on, I have sent e-mails to the city and county, I have made some phone calls and will make some more on Monday to everyone I can think of up to and including that guy in Salem we call our governor. People, unless you make this a big issue, then you can expect this kind of shit everywhere. ODOT thinks they got the answer to homelessness, well let’s show them that the homeless/houseless may be vulnerable but we who live inside will not let this stand. I will ask you to pass this on, let’s get together and do something that will knock their socks off.

Let’s call for the first meeting at City Hall this Wednesday, 10/30/2013 and meet at the food carts, get some lunch and take over the courtyard. I got a few bucks, “want to take a ride?” Individuals For Justice will be there for the council meeting and when we come out during lunch it would be good to see lots of homeless there to meet and decide on a date and action against the Lents Neighborhood Association and ODOT. I know there is a meeting tomorrow, 10/28/2013 at City Hall and we will attend that one. The Musketeers had a saying, All for one, one for all; we are in this together and fight we must.
Meetings:
Monday---3:00 PM at City Hall—Michael Withey—Six Points and more
Wednesday 0930 for Council meeting—Individuals For Justice
1100 for lunch meeting – Individuals For Justice, start to coordinate actions against ODOT & Lents Neighborhood Association and the city. Please get this out to your list and let us show that we who care about others will fight these greedy, short sighted jerks.

Lone Vet Report Back on October 10 2013
Mood:  amorous
Now Playing: There are times that make me smile, that happened during Monday the 7th of October
Topic: ACTIONS !

 {Report was copied from Facebook}

Joseph Walsh-Lone Vet

There are times that make me smile, that happened during Monday the 7th of October when we were at City Hall about 0745 with a big sign saying, “Nick Fish got to go” and I was wearing a shirt with a picture of Comm. Fish sucking milk from the corporations. I was having fun when I saw “The Fishman” and he was coming straight at me. He walked up to me, said good morning and put his hand out, we shook hands and we both smiled. I wondered what he was thinking as he went into the building---it was very strange.
The next day, Tuesday, was taken up by going to the County building for a protest against the policy or lack of a policy of the sheriff’s department concerning holds put on prisoners by the county cops. There are about 350+ inmates who have ICE holds on them and only about 10% are or have been released. The County Commissioners thought that the sheriff was going to alleviate some of the over-crowding in our jail system—Nope!
Wednesday morning it was back to see the 3 S---s. I used to call city council members the 5 S---s but two of them have been taken off the list for good behavior and/or actions. The City Council is getting harder to speak during communications due to the number of people who want to tell the city something. I was not signed up officially but there were a few items I wanted to say something about. I ended up speaking on three different items and was doing ok until the last one and man did I hit an open nerve with Fish, Novick and even the Mayor having a go at me. It had to do with a mobile home that was up at the Butte. The city had to move it and get rid of it; Fish wanted to just sell it off and Individuals For Justice recommended they try to utilize it during the R2D2 move, maybe put it under the Broadway Bridge for use by the people who may live there someday. My suggestion fell on deaf ears; one of the things I have become aware of during my monitoring of the city council hearings is that our perception of reality is very different. I don’t mean a little, I mean a lot. I still think they do something to their brains and souls when they take the oath of office or they secretly drink water with fluoride in it and their ability to deal with reality is diminished. They went off on tangents about the PUD for god sakes; they compared the criticism of building a million dollar house and now putting it on the market for around $400,000 and taking a $600,000 loss to saving a $13,000 mobile home and use it for the houseless? My mind just can’t make this stuff up. The thing I notice the most, their anger at the idea of losing the water department. Hey, guys---I am not the power behind this move, I may support it, but I am not the instigator for this project.
Thursday would be more fun, the county is always more pleasant than the city, the commissioners there know how to treat an old guy who may be a pain, but is worried about our country. Thursday was good. Lightning and I monitor the Board almost every week now and we have been joined by Charlie Johnson and that is a compliment to both of us. Lightning and I do not always agree on everything and that is interesting during the meetings, so far we have kept our friendship intact and I hope that continues. Well, we have our Friday on the Bridge Day tomorrow and Saturday we have two events we want to attend, one a celebration of R2D2 two years of existence, 12-5 PM and the other, The Fred Otis memorial for his son who was shot down by the Portland PD.

Fred is in the hospital and has asked his family and friends to do the vigil and we will. It is on 6th and Glison at 6:00 PM.

So, many things to do and we are busier than ever, feel free to join us on our journey to do good. I have a new shirt that I wore to the County Board meeting, “My Country is the World and,( on the back) My Religion is to do good” Thomas Paine. He is my favorite of the founding fathers, always honest and did not change with the blowing of the winds. That’s all folks!
See ya in the streets---soon I hope.
Joe
PS Did you see where 6 Congressional Representatives gave up some of their liberty so we could have more. Wow! That will keep me going for another month or so!

There are times I am argumentative, arrogant,
Mood:  on fire
Now Playing: October 1 was one of those times
Topic: Justice
74x50-1856549.jpg  "Trying to Relax"

[copied from Facebook]

There are times I am argumentative, arrogant, and really angry, October 1 was one of those times. I did spend some time on the #4 bus trying to relax because I knew I was going to a meeting of the evil empire, something called “Civilized and Safe.” The directions to this gathering of the evil ones, said it was going to be held at PSU Student Union Hall; that was just sad to me. I was not sure what the hell this was about but knew it was not something that I would support. I went and wore one of my t-shirts that said on the front “56 humans died on our streets in 2012” on the back a picture of a cemetery and the question, “How many must die before you notice.” I arrived and went to the front of the room because I like my evil in front of me at all times. I looked at the panel and hoped I was wrong. In the back of the room there was some noticeable movement and I recognized Commissioner Kafoury from the County, I was sad she was there, why? I went up to get some coffee and recognized some people but they were not friendlies, they were people who I no longer trust, or just dislike. I thought, “This is hostile territory,” and it was. The program began. I was also tired as this was the second event I attended on that Tuesday, the first being a wonderful debate on the pros and cons of the coming initiative about taking the Water Department and BES away from the city council. (More on this later.)
The opening remarks were what I feared; they were antidotal, stories of bad behavior by the people on the street. The cop, Robert Day, who told his story about being at City Hall and one of the homeless lit up a crack pipe! I thought, “My god, a crack pipe, that is just bad manners. He went on to indict the subject of his story and of course implied that all people who live on the street light up crack pipes. That is the problem with generalizations; they make all people involved who are forced onto the streets, but never saying it. I was angry with this presentation and wanted to leave but I wanted to be around when the questions were allowed from the audience; I had much to say to these people who call themselves human and are not.
Here is some of policeman Robert Day, what a piece of work this guy is:
http://www.kptv.com/video?autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=9373877#.Uk1ovSwvtG0.facebook

Marvin Mitchell, Julia West House was just as bad, his claim to fame was to tell a story about how he, almost without support from his staff, got those street people to stop using bad language and they were sleeping in the recreation room---my god have they no shame? I was more depressed than angry with this person, he was supposed to help and he was using his authority to pound a very vulnerable section of our society into his image/ shape or they were told to leave. What a guy!

Marvin did come up to me and tell me that the 56 humans who had died alone on the streets of Portland in 2012 died because they did not want to come inside. I went ballistic, told him to get away from me and stop talking as he was a defective human being and I did not want to spend any time with him, ever! He did not know what to do, he left and the blond lady who seemed to be in charge came up to me and that did not go well either; she was another monster, I felt like a Grimm.

She said something about her feelings being hurt because somewhere in my rant at the people on the stage I told them they were all insane. She wanted me to apologize and I told her she was insane, she was running a con on the people and blaming everything on the people who were forced onto the streets and that pissed me off to no end. She threatened to have me removed and I said, “Go ahead, have me thrown out that should be a good show for your guests.” She went away, and other women in the back of the room told me I was too loud, Ha! I was sad to see the mayor, Commissioner Fritz and Commissioner Kafoury were there, I went to challenge this group, not sure why the leading politicians were there. When I did ask a staffer why his boss was there the answer was they wanted to listen to what this group had to say; made me sad. I walked from PSU back down to city hall to cool off and think about what just happened, I was glad that I challenged this evil group but I was exhausted and looked forward to the ride home and some rest.
I had trouble sleeping but needed to get up at 0600 to go to the city council meeting the next day. I was very tired when I went in and Commissioner Fritz looked worn out also; the meeting would perk me up a bit and Commissioner Novick did something that startled me. He took on Wal-Mart. This is going to be interesting, this company does not like people to take them on and for an official to do it, and well we will watch this one. Commissioner Novick with support from Amanda and some of the rest actually named Wal-Mart as a company the city should not invest in, big fight coming on this one for sure. Went to the County meeting and gave my 3 minutes of testimony and talked about the event on Monday night and how sad I was that 3 politicians were there. Commissioner Kafoury came down to talk to me and let me know her and her staff left in the middle and could not stand what this group was saying, that was impressive. I accepted her explanation of why she was there. I was off for the 2:00 PM hearing on R2D2 by the city.

There seems to be a preliminary agreement between R2D2 and the city to allow the people to leave Chinatown and move under the Broadway Bridge. During the discussion I felt like I was watching an old movie about Moses and the movement of the Israelites out of Egypt. The Pearl sent their lawyers and their builders, reminded me of Edward G. Robinson character in the movie, a very sleazy kind of guy who causes all kinds of problem for the people. The testimony of R2D2 was wonderful, telling, and full of pleas for help for the first time in two years. The decision to grant the program the ok was put off, but I think this is going to happen in a few weeks. R2D2 wants this and we fully support their wishes, they have earned our support and we stand with them and all people who want a safe place to put their head down. I was, and said so publicly, proud to support the city council on this issue. The people of the Pearl need to rethink their values or they will all just dry up and blow away in the dust of corruption. There is another meeting with the city today, Friday, 10/4/2013 at 2:00 PM and we are not invited.

Today, there will be a historic meeting that Individuals For Justice has pushed for years, a meeting between the homeless/housless and the city officials and/or senior staff to try to figure out how to resolve people being forced to sleep on the street. We are happy about not being invited because we feel it is important to talk to the people who are suffering, not professionals or activists, but real people who just want a safe place to be. Our hopes are high for this meeting and will be present after the meeting to lend any support we can. So, things are-a-happening and I am tired but smiling at the possibilities; we are hoping for the best, but do realize these are tough issues and the fact the city seems to be trying is wonderful. I am saying so many nice things about politicians lately, it makes me nervous.
Stay safe and we will see ya in the streets. Oh, I forgot!
Dear Mr. Policeman,
If you beat or mace a human or an animal know that there is a special place in hell, very deep into the pit that is reserved for you. You may think you are getting away with something, but you are not. Fear your God and know that someday she will ask you why you acted so badly to the least among us when she said, in so many ways, “Treat the poor with love and I will love you; fu-k with them and I will fu-k with You!” “I am the Lord thy God and I have a temper.” book 1 c 1

Week of 22ND of SEPTEMBER
Mood:  on fire
Now Playing: Report from the Lone Vet
Topic: City Hall

WEEK OF 22ND SEPTEMBER

[Originally posted on Facebook by Joe Walsh] 10.1.13

This week, Individuals For Justice were out and about. We were at the City Council meeting on the 25th and fought alongside of Cop Watch, Charlie Johnson from KBOO and the ACLU over a report concerning the actions of the police. The report, like everything else that is directed or influenced by the police, was a sham. They found that over 80% of people being subjected to exclusion orders are African- Americans. They don’t see a problem with this number and defended the police for outstanding work. (African-Americans make up about 6-7% of our population)
We pointed out that hotspots are violations in themselves because if you go into an area that has been labeled a “Hotspot” you are going to treat people very different than say in front of the Justice Center. It would seem once again the council had reservations about this report but voted to accept it. We were not happy when we left the council. The next morning it was off to see our friends at the County. The County Board is working well with no Cogen. We did not offer any testimony because we had nothing to say. The Hotel that metro wants is a done deal and we hope it fulfills all the hype offered by the President of Metro; we hope but have grave doubts. We called for all who we know to help out Jose Serrica who has requested we support his effort to assist those who are on the streets with things they may need. He has been doing this for a while now and knows what he is doing. He asked for a $100.00 a month and Individuals For Justice will cover half and asked the people we know to help. That is what we do, we fight, we yell, we compliment, we assists others in their quest to do good. We also write some!
I forgot to tell you about a wonderful presentation by Mr. Thomas Linzey. He talked about thinking outside, under, alongside the box; never inside. He told us about communities that would not give up even when they were beaten by the corporations. They said, hell no! Read his book called, “Be The Change.” I will! David Delk, Alliance for Democracy, gets the credit for this one, it was great. Thank you Thomas and David, you make me smile.
Went back to the Hawthorne Bridge with the winds and rains, I was hoping for the sympathy vote, standing in the rain always gets you some horns blasting, it was fun but very windy. I just held my sign thanking people for calling, emailing or talking about not bombing Syria---it worked, we have not bombed those poor people who are suffering and don’t need us to bomb them in order to save them. We hope the UN succeeds in its effort to stop the violence.
We went to a press conference on the 14 floor of the Justice Center. Sarah Hobbs asked for our support and Malcolm, Charlie Johnson and I showed up and had a ball. The press conference had to do with an analysis of completed suicides. The period of study was April 2011-June 2013. We asked questions and met with the unit called Behavioral Health Unit, there was a VA rep. and other people who work in the health field who are all concerned about our standing in the nation; we are among the highest cities to have suicides every four days. There are other issues we would have loved to have examined but we were cut off. We did get to talk to some of the professionals and asked them to come and talk to our groups, they seemed ready to do something like that; we shall see.
Yea, a busy week and we have another one this week but what the hell, we do laugh a lot and we get to do all this stuff for free---ha!
Most of you know that I am not a republican or democrat; I belong to the Oregon Progressive Party. I mention this so you know I do not like ether of these “Two gang of thieves”. But I gotta tell ya, the leadership of the GOP has all gone mad. They will shut down this government in order to hurt this president, which is outrageous and should be rejected by every voter. I know it will not happen, the rejection part, but I just got to say it. Take care and stay safe, we all have much work to do. We must learn to support all those people who are doing good for others and get rid of those who enrich themselves. “Storm The Bastille, with votes and calls.”

Coffee Codes and Donations for Hot Cups of Joe
Mood:  special
Now Playing: Let me know what you think?
Topic: Peacemakers

A person will go in and ask for a “code word” coffee and the owner or clerk will give him/her one and not charge them because it is prepaid.  Our account has money in it for this very reason, the people who are living on the street have a backup so they always have coffee available to them.

The problem is that we are running out of money and that is where you come in, I am asking you to help in the following way.  When you are downtown, stop at Bento Coffee & Cookie, 431 SW Madison and put some loot on the account.  It is located across from city hall next to the day care in the Portland Building.

Ask the owner to credit the account and that way more people can use our “Coffee Friendship.”

Roberto and I have been doing this and other things for a time now, but our loot is getting low so I thought you might want to help.  Please do not send me any money, you must do this on your own or not.  We will keep it going because it is a neat idea and the people who are "houseless" like it.  The name of the account is under my first name, Joe.

Let me know what you think?
